Every service pit faces the same trade-off: protect workers at the pit edge, or allow vehicles and equipment to cross. Existing solutions force you to choose.

Heavy steel plate covers require two workers to move and get left off because they are a burden. Removable handrails must be completely disassembled, stored somewhere, and reinstalled — workers skip putting them back. Pit netting does not prevent falls, it only softens impact, and carries a maximum 330 lb rating. Plywood covers deteriorate and create a false sense of security.

The collapsible service pit handrail eliminates that trade-off. It folds below the floor plane to clear the opening for traffic, then extends back into position when workers need pit access. OSHA 1910.28 — Fall protection required for pits 4 feet deep or more. Guardrail systems or covers mandatory for pits 6+ feet deep.

OSHA 1910.29 — Guardrail height 42 inches ±3 inches. Must withstand 200 lbs downward force. Smooth surfaces required. No snag points.

OSHA 1910.144 — Safety yellow finish meets OSHA high-visibility caution marking requirements.

Important: Even where OSHA's shallow pit exception applies (service and repair pits under 10 feet with trained employees and floor markings), insurance carriers, state OSHA programs like Cal-OSHA, and corporate safety audits increasingly require physical guardrail barriers. Installing a collapsible handrail positions your facility above minimum compliance.
