Heavy steel plate covers require two workers to move and get left off because they are a burden. Removable handrails must be completely disassembled, stored somewhere, and reinstalled — workers skip putting them back. OSHA 1910.28 — Fall protection required for pits 4 feet deep or more. Guardrail systems or covers mandatory for pits 6+ feet deep.

OSHA 1910.29 — Guardrail height 42 inches ±3 inches. Must withstand 200 lbs downward force. Smooth surfaces required. No snag points.

OSHA 1910.144 — Safety yellow finish meets OSHA high-visibility caution marking requirements.

Important: Even where OSHA's shallow pit exception applies (service and repair pits under 10 feet with trained employees and floor markings), insurance carriers, state OSHA programs like Cal-OSHA, and corporate safety audits increasingly require physical guardrail barriers. Installing a collapsible handrail positions your facility above minimum compliance.
